HOMO FERRATUS - by makadi3000

I'm a designer currently living and working in Zurich, right in the middle of Europe. This blog is about my original toy work and hobby interests. I dedicate it to Japanese artist Kow Yokoyama, creator of the Maschinen Krieger universe, which has always been a teacher and source of inspiration to me, as he is for many contemporary concept artists and illustrators of the 21st century.

Thanks for looking! - Adi D'Agostino aka makadi3000

CERBERUS (07)

Little more progress to the sensor head...

starting adding gribbly bits :)

CAMEL (02)

Part 2: The Body

Don't forget to add the spheric part and to paint the inside before glueing the body ;) I modified the guard plate to get the right position of the engine bell and guide arm...

than carefully puttying and smoothing this beautiful piece of design! I bought a scribing tool for re-trace the panel lines of the body and decided to go with my own interpretation of some 'vague' sections of the original design.

I didn't like how the junction section was arranged originally and went for a slightly fifferent assembly.

All details and extra parts from the 1/35 Gepard has been added to the body... that was fun! :)

I fitted the cockpit-suspensions with sleeves (from Matilda) for easy spring attachment and closed the back side with a PE disc...

The cables will be plugged into the middle section by use of a magnet, polycaps will keep the cockpit movable and detachable.

CERBERUS (06)

Next step is to give the right dimension to the rear, middle and front cylinder. The head is made from a fuel tank (Italeri Truck Accessories).

I added end caps, which are used to cover screws on furnitures, to get the raised shape at the ends of the cilinders...

One side of the head has a spheric end...

The main tank is made from two
bottle caps of unknown provenance and the rear cylinder is a small 1/35 oil drum also with raised end caps.

P.K.30 LIBELLE (01)

The LIBELLE is an aircraft device of my own design which I already started in 2005 (!!!) Because of some blurry old "in-progress" pics that I found recently I decited to reactivate the project before it's too late :)

I started with a 1/72 Hughes 500 kit, styren sheet and putty...

CERBERUS (05)

This is how a spare bin of preselected parts looks before starting the mess... just a few will go into the build.

Everything is taken from the Rolls so fare... gas tank and engine.

Naval barrels from RC shop and an unknown engine (not sure if Tamiya Tank Maintenance Crew) is used for the main build-up.

Blue cylinder is from Preiser welding equipment...

CAMEL (01)

Part 1: Cockpit with Pilot

The cabin is kitbashing at its best!!! Make sure the canopy closes properly before glueing the pedal! I had to cut the pilot in half and modify the legs angle for ideal fit.

The undercoat should be painted in layers otherwise it will be very dificult to reach all hidden corners when fully assembled.

Painted pilot...

I found some real space pictures of the Gemini capsule, which I would like to use as a reference for the camel cockpit color scheme.

Added some custom details to the cabine, like control sticks made from a piece of wheel suspension from the spares bin...

and filled the console with a monitor... Yep, it's a Ma.Kintosh ;)

Fasten your seat belts... all done! :)

CERBERUS (04)

Fine tuning with Tamiya putty, after sanding I can start adding parts to the engine section... now the real fun begins :)

CERBERUS (03)

To get the right shape of the body I first filled the front with balsa wood, then covered everything with car butty and styrene.

CERBERUS (02)

Cannon compartment is fixed, now the front of the fender needs to be cut a little bit down before I can start with the body. The Rolls Royce gearbox pieces have been glued to the fender and I added U-shaped styrene to the edges in the back.

CERBERUS (01)

Last year GIRAP attracted attention with the announcement of a 1/35 CERBERUS kit. The kit immediately went on top of my wish list. Well knowing how difficult it would be to get hold of one, I decited to minimize frustration by building my own one :) I started to buy Rolls Royce fenders in different scales and was lucky enough to find a spare fender of the rare POCHER 1/8 Rolls-Royce kit, which was Kow's main donor kit for the original 1/20 CERBERUS. This time I decidet to go for a smaller and more assessable version at approx. 1/40 scale using a 1/16 RR kit. So here is my build of the CERBERUS...

Original CERBERUS by Kow Yokoyama

There are two 1/16 kits available: One is the Rolls-Royce 1934 Phantom II Continental kit from Revell, which has the fenders and footboard shape very close to the Pocher. Only the spare wheel hollow is missing. And there is the Rolls-Royce 1937 Phantom III kit from Entex (picture) which has a slightly different shape in the front and definitely less matching in the rear, but has the defining spare wheel design. I decidet to go with the Entex RR and to save the Revell fenders for another project (later more!) However, for a few specific parts you'll need to have the Revell as well. So, my suggestion is to buy both kits and go with the Entex :)

I reshaped/reduced the height of the fenders rear end, then brought into position with styrene sheet. Gearbox and wheel suspension is from the Revell kit, the Nitto Fireball nozzles are just perfect in scale.

Modelers Paradise! Xmas'07

You never can't have enough of it... model kits for kit bashing!!! What I discovered the last December in a thrift store was a firm basis for a long modeling career :) Thank you, Santa!

Tribute to Kow Yokoyama!

This blog is about my Maschinen Krieger passion and model building hobby, strongly influenced by Kow Yokoyama. Enjoy! :)

Maschinen Krieger ZbV 3000 (originally known as SF3D and now also known by the abbreviation Ma. K.) is a science fiction universe created by Japanese artist & sculptor Kow Yokoyama in the 1980s as a feature article in Hobby Japan magazine. The story is set in the 29th century, as two opposing human forces are fighting for control of the habitable areas of Earth. Combat armor suits are prominently featured throughout the story.

Ma. K. originally began as a series of SF3D photo essays in Hobby Japan. Kow scratch-built scale models of unique, retro-futuristic armored fighting suits and vehicles. A small but dedicated fan following soon developed, and licensed model kits were produced for retail by the company Nitto.

Nitto has recently reissued most of the kits, repackaged under the Maschinen Krieger Zbv 3000 name (for copyright reasons). There are currently two Ma. K. 'encyclopedias' in print by Dai Nippon Kaiga. The Japanese model kit company Wave has also recently issued several new kits, and for many years Modelkasten has produced resin 'conversion kits.' There are also many fans who produce kits and accessories. The continued support and recent surge in activity by all parties has helped to maintain & expand the fan base. (Source: Wikipedia)
